Should I Participate in the Faire Summer Market?
Hey Friends! 💛
If you sell on Faire, you've probably already seen the prompt to opt into Summer Market. Maybe you already opted-in without thinking too much about it. Maybe you've been staring at that banner in your Brand Portal for two weeks now, not sure what to do. Either way, you're not alone, and I don't think this is actually a simple yes or no question.
The real question isn't "should sellers do the Summer Market." It's
"Does this make sense for MY business, right now?"
So let's walk through it together, the real upsides and the real costs, so you can make this decision on purpose instead of by default.
The Quick Facts First
Before we get into weighing it out, here's what's actually true about how this market works:
Faire matches your discount dollar for dollar, up to 5%. Set 5% off, and retailers see 10%. Anything you discount past that 5% is coming straight out of your own margin, Faire doesn't match further.
There's no additional fee to participate on top of Faire’s normal fees. Your financial risk here is the discount itself, not a separate cost like a trade show booth or travel.
If you want to be included when Faire's Market directory goes live to retailers, and get that extra email blast visibility, you'll want your promotion set by June 29th. That is NOT a hard "miss it and you're locked out" deadline... you can still opt in after that date and participate in the market itself. June 29th is just the cutoff for that extra round of visibility. Think of it less as a deadline and more as your best shot at being seen.
Let's Actually Weigh This Out
Money
The upside: that first 5% discount is essentially split with Faire, not 100% on you.
The real cost: have you actually run your margin after Faire's commission AND your discount? If you're guessing, that's worth figuring out before you opt in, not after you're already filling orders at a price you didn't mean to set and quickly realizing you’re upside-down on your margins.
Capacity
The upside: a deadline like this is a great excuse to finally tackle the stuff that's been sitting on your "someday" list... your product photos, your About section, your listings. That work pays off all year, not just for one week in July.
The real cost: can you actually fulfill a spike in orders without missing your shipping window? Late shipments hurt your seller score + Top Shop metrics, and that follows you well past market week. If you're already stretched thin this summer, that's worth being honest with yourself about.
Timing
The upside: retailers shopping during Market week are often actively planning their fall and holiday buys. That's higher intent traffic, not just more traffic. Summer TENDS to be a busier market than Winter Market for that reason.
The real cost: do you actually have product ready that fits what they're shopping for? If your fall and holiday line isn't ready yet, the extra visibility doesn't do much for you right now.
Relationships
The upside: a strong showing can turn into recurring retailer relationships, real ones, not just one-time orders. Year-round, reliable income.
The real cost: that only happens if you have a plan to follow up. The market can get you the introduction. What you do after is on you.
So, Should You Do It?
Here's how I'd think about it: if your numbers work, your shop is ready (or you have time to get it ready), and you genuinely have the bandwidth to fulfill and follow up, this could be a solid move for your business this year.
If any of that feels shaky right now, it is completely okay to sit this one out and put your energy into your regular outreach and order fulfillment instead. That's not giving up. That's just a different strategy, and it's still a strategy! Plus, you’ll likely be getting some extra visiblity and orders anyway due to increased traffic during market week.
Personally, I'm looking hard at my own product mix before deciding how deep to discount this time around. More discount doesn't automatically mean more results, and I'd rather be intentional about that number than go big just because everyone else is.
Whatever you decide, decide on purpose. That's really the whole point of this post.
I'd love to hear what you're deciding and why. Come share it in the Facebook Group, I'm always interested to hear how different sellers are weighing this, since what's right for my shop might be completely wrong for yours. That's kind of the whole point too.
Cheering you on always! 💛
